ACSA is saddened by the passing of former superintendent and ACSA Region 6 Consultant John Searles on Oct. 25, 2024. He was 96.

His career in public education included serving as superintendent of schools for Martinez USD and Alameda USD before retiring in 1993. After retirement, Searles worked for ACSA Region 6 as a consultant alongside former Region 6 Executive Director Bob Giannini. He was dedicated to serving the association’s state and region initiatives and worked for ACSA Region 6 until 2015, well into his 80s.
A passionate leader in his community, Searles volunteered with community organizations including Meals on Wheels, Christmas for Everyone, and the Alhambra Interact Club. For his contributions to the community, he was awarded Citizen of the Year by the city of Martinez.
