ACSA is saddened to hear of the passing of Delaine Eastin, the first woman to serve as California’s Superintendent of Public Instruction and a groundbreaking student advocate. She was 76 years old.
As state superintendent of public instruction, one of her greatest achievements was the integration of class-size reduction. By investing nearly $3 billion, the state was able to successfully cut class sizes from 30 students to 20 students in kindergarten through third-grade classrooms across 98 percent of all California public school districts. She also led the adoption of statewide standards in math, science, English language arts and social studies.
In recognition of her service to California public school students, a school in Union City was named Delaine Eastin Elementary School in 2002.
