The Vallejo City Unified Board of Education has announced the selection of Rubén Aurelio as the new Vallejo City Unified School District Superintendent. The Board unanimously selected Aurelio as the finalist at the Special Closed Session Board Meeting on March 16, to replace retiring Superintendent William Spalding.
Aurelio comes to VCUSD with a distinguished career in education. He is currently the Superintendent in the St. Helena Unified School District. Prior to that he served as the Associate Superintendent and Chief Academic Officer of the Berkeley Unified School District and West Contra Costa Unified School District.
He also served in the San Leandro Unified School District for 11 years as Director of Assessment and Data and Assistant Director of Technology, Assessment, Research and Evaluation. Additionally, he has served in both principal and teaching positions.
Aurelio is a charismatic leader whose strongest skill is his ability to collaborate and build relationships. In St. Helena Unified, he was able to bridge the gap between two very distinct community groups, Hispanic/Latino and White. To fully engage the community, he worked with his team to hold meetings at the local apartment complex recreation centers. One of his strengths is the relationships he establishes with students, staff and the community.
Aurelio grew up near Los Angeles in a monolingual Spanish-speaking home as the youngest of five children. His parents immigrated from Argentina to the United States and worked in food services and manufacturing. He earned a B.A. degree in Anthropology from the University of California, Berkeley, a Master’s degree from California State University, East Bay, and is certified as a Chief Business Official. Aurelio is a proud first-generation college graduate and is proud that his entire education has been in public schools.
Superintendent Aurelio’s appointment was approved on April 10, at a Regular Meeting of the Governing Board. He is scheduled to begin his role as Superintendent on July 1, 2024.
