I recently co-presented on the topic “Leadership is More than a Title” with Tricia Zarevich of Los Gatos-Saratoga Union High School District and Michelle Goncalves of Carmel Unified School District at the 2024 ACSA CEL Institute in Costa Mesa. Our session had more than 60 attendees from a variety of classified positions and regions across the state. The message we shared seemed to resonate with everyone in the room, and I believe it’s important to continue to share the message for all classified leaders, and those who strive to be leaders.
Leadership isn’t confined to a specific title on a business card. It’s about making a positive impact on those around you, inspiring and empowering them to be their best selves. Whether you’re an aspiring leader or seeking personal growth, understanding fundamental principles and employing a personalized approach can unlock your full leadership potential.
One key principle is personalized communication. Tailoring your message to resonate with different individuals is crucial for inspiring action. Imagine delivering a generic motivational speech to a diverse group of colleagues. While some might find it inspiring, others might feel disconnected. By using personalized insights and interpretations, you can make your message more relatable and impactful for each individual, fostering a deeper connection and boosting their motivation.
This personalized approach can be implemented through various channels, forming a “cohesive echo chamber” for your core message. Regular departmental meetings, casual personal interactions and even digital communication platforms can be used to consistently and authentically reinforce your message, ensuring everyone receives your message loud and clear.
Active listening is another vital principle. It’s more than simply hearing the words; it’s about truly understanding the underlying message and emotions. This means paying close attention, repeating what you hear to confirm understanding and remaining non-judgmental. It’s about focusing on solutions, not blame, and offering empathy when someone faces challenges. By actively listening, you build trust, demonstrate care and create a safe space for open communication.
Encouraging innovation and learning from mistakes fosters a growth mindset within your circle. Granting individuals the freedom to experiment and try new things without fear of failure fosters a culture of creativity and continuous improvement. When mistakes arise, view them as learning opportunities, not detrimental roadblocks. Encourage reflection, analysis and growth from these experiences, fostering resilience and a willingness to take calculated risks.
Finally, building a culture of openness is essential for effective leadership. This involves creating an environment where everyone feels comfortable and valued. Implement regular one-on-one meetings where individuals feel they can be heard and organize team-building events to strengthen bonds and promote camaraderie. Importantly, value each person’s input and show appreciation for their unique contributions. This fosters a sense of belonging, respect and trust, encouraging collaboration and shared success.
By embracing personalized communication, active listening, encouraging a growth mindset and fostering a culture of openness, you can unleash your inner leader and make a positive, lasting impact on those around you, regardless of your official title.
Remember, there’s no single “best” leadership style. The most effective approach is adapting your actions based on the specific situation and your relationships with your colleagues. By embracing personalized communication, active listening, encouraging a growth mindset and fostering a culture of openness, you can unleash your inner leader and make a positive, lasting impact on those around you, regardless of your official title.
