More than 300 school leaders tuned in live to watch ACSA’s virtual Leadership Assembly on Feb. 19.
One of three governance meetings held throughout the school year, ACSA has welcomed members and non-members to the February governance meeting for the last three years to give all school leaders the opportunity to see ACSA leadership in action and access the professional learning that is a regular part of these meetings.
“Always glad to be in the company of my ACSA family,” said ACSA President Dr. Daryl Camp before calling the meeting to order.
The meeting got started with a recorded message from Gov. Gavin Newsom, who spoke to school leaders about recent investments in education and the work that still needs to be done.
He also recognized the dedication of school administrators.
“I just want to thank all of you for the critical role you have provided to make all of this happen,” Newsom said. “You’re hard at work before the bell rings each morning and long after the students go home. This is the critical leadership that doesn’t always get the recognition that it deserves, but the impact is real.”
The meeting included presentations from Camp and ACSA Executive Director Dr. Edgar Zazueta. Attendees also got the latest analysis of the state budget and other legislative updates from ACSA Senior Director of Governmental Relations Iván Carrillo and Legislative Advocate Serette Kaminski.
Interview clips gave attendees insights into five of the candidates running for the office of state superintendent of public instruction. They also heard a conversation with the candidate poised to be the next ACSA vice president, Diego Ochoa, superintendent of San Mateo-Foster City School District.
ACSA Senior Director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion and Professional Learning Dr. Tracie Noriega moderated a panel discussion with site administrators who shared real-life experiences and strategies that work at their schools. Dr. Marvin Reed (Dublin USD), Dr. Myeshia Whigham (Oceanside USD), and Dr. Monique Walton (Hayward USD) participated in a conversation that touched on challenges, wellness, student achievement and supports, improving systems, and building relationships with families, students and staff.
