Walker elected to national association for federally impacted schools
April 21, 2025
The National Association of Federally Impacted Schools has announced that Dr. Christine Walker, superintendent of Hueneme Elementary School District in Ventura County, has been elected to the NAFIS Board of Directors.
The election took place at the 2025 NAFIS Spring Conference in Washington, D.C. As a member of the NAFIS Board, Walker serves as a national leader advocating for school districts that receive impact aid. She also helps shape NAFIS public policy priorities and oversees planning for the association.
Impact aid reimburses school districts for the loss of revenue caused by the presence of nontaxable federal property, including military installations; Indian Trust, Treaty and Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act lands; Federal low-income housing facilities; and national laboratories and other federal buildings and property. It helps ensure students who attend schools on or near federal property have access to a quality education.
Walker is in her ninth year as Hueneme’s superintendent. A dedicated advocate for educational equity, she began her career as a paraprofessional in San Diego, going on to work as a teacher, assistant principal, principal, and assistant superintendent of Business Services before assuming her current role.
A steadfast champion of impact aid, Walker has been engaged with NAFIS since 2012. She is vice president of the Federal Lands Impacted Schools Association (a NAFIS subgroup) and treasurer of the California Association of Federally Impacted Schools. She also serves on the California Collaborative for Educational Excellence Advisory Board, focusing on improving statewide educational outcomes, and as a commissioner for First 5 Ventura County, supporting early childhood development.
“I am honored to serve as a board member for the National Association of Federally Impacted Schools,” Walker said, in a news release. “I look forward to advocating for the needs of our federally impacted students, ensuring critical funding, and working alongside dedicated leaders in the NAFIS community.”
NAFIS Executive Director Nicole Russell said: “Christine’s extensive experience in education, unwavering advocacy for educational equity, and deep commitment to impact aid make her an invaluable addition to the NAFIS Board. As we navigate an evolving funding landscape, her passion and expertise will play a crucial role in guiding NAFIS through the challenges ahead.”
Walker’s term will last for two years.
