Edward Trimis, Ed.D., retired in June after 40 years of providing strong arts and academic programs that have allowed students in the Los Angeles Unified School District to discover their passion and potential. Trimis began as a teacher in the district in 1982 and went on to serve as a music teacher, music department chair, specialist, assistant principal and principal, spending his last six years as Principal of VAPA Legacy High School.
Highlights include founding dozens of new music and performing arts programs, classes, choirs, bands and groups at various sites in the district; creating Freshman Centre, a ninth-grade academy at Polytechnic HS, and the first LAUSD virtual academy at City of Angels School; being invited to the television showcase PaleyFest and meeting the cast of Glee; meeting Stephen Schwarz at an event with musical writing students; and having two different student writing teams win finalist awards and have their shows performed by professionals in the Show Search competition.
Trimis reflected on his legacy during VAPA Legacy High School’s recent commencement.
“I set out to make a difference in other people’s lives and raise a family that would do the same,” he said. “The main difference from teacher to administrator is having more control of resources and tools that we need to get this work done. But we all know the work is never done. I am one piece of the work, standing on the shoulders of giants who went before me (my parents, my teachers, my mentors), and hoping those I work with will continue the legacy.”
